Obituary of Marvin William Rickling

Died peacefully on May 20th. He was 84 years old and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosemary; his five children, John C. Rickling (Lera), Marian A. Mostowtt (Darryl), Brian S. Rickling (Jetsy), Gary W. Rickling (Elizabeth), and Thomas B. Rickling, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, James Rickling (Edna Mae) San Diego. His brother Jack Rickling (Judy) predeceased him. He was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Earl and Louise Rickling. He graduated from Hamilton Catholic High School and matriculated at the University of Notre Dame where he graduated in 1952 with a business degree and Navy ROTC. He was a Korean War veteran and later retired from the Navy as a Lt. Commander USNR. On April 16, 1955, he married Rosemary T. Geyer at St. Peter's Church in Hamilton, Ohio. The following year they moved to San Diego CA where he began working for General Dynamics and became very involved in the Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as the Notre Dame Club of San Diego, where he was a past president and was honored as their Man of the Year in 1970. In 1969, he became the co-owner of Goodrick Reality where he continued to work until his retirement in 1993. During his professional career, he shared his knowledge by teaching real estate classes at Mesa Junior College in San Diego, CA. He was a wonderful father who enjoyed spending time with his family in the outdoors, enjoying such activities as body surfing in the ocean, fishing, both fresh water and deep-sea, hiking, camping, and sailing. In addition, he was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America and a Little League coach for several of his children's' teams. He loved playing golf all over the world, even on a 3- hole course on Fiji. As a senior, he played softball in San Diego and Las Vegas, where he and Rosemary moved in 1994. He continued playing softball into his eighties, including on a senior travel team that played in Arizona, California and Nevada. He also enjoyed spending time in Hawaii with his wife as well as traveling the world with her. Throughout his life, he had a deep faith in God and was very involved in his Catholic faith, serving as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Columba Church (San Diego), Blessed Sacrament Church (San Diego) and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church (Las Vegas). He was active in the Serra Clubs of San Diego and Las Vegas as well as Serra International, lay organizations active in promoting and supporting priestly vocations. Serving as a member of the International Board and one of the founders of the Las Vegas Serra Club. Friends will be received at Kraft-Sussman Funeral Services, 3975 S. Durango Drive, suite 104, for a visitation and Vigil from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, May 26. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 27 at St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 7260 W Sahara Ave., followed by interment at the Southern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
