Obituary of Dorothy Shapiro Nathan

Dorothy (Dottie) Shapiro Nathan passed away on February 16, 2015, three days prior to her 94th birthday. Dottie was born in Binghamton, NY to the late Lilian and Edward Shapiro, on February 19, 1921. She was raised in Utica, NY where she graduated from Utica Free Academy. After high school she married Norman Nathan, and they raised their three sons in Utica before retirement, at which time they moved to Del Ray Beach, Fl before settling in Las Vegas in 1989. In Utica, the family were members of Temple Beth El. Dottie was a multifaceted person. She had a thirst for knowledge and attended OLLI classes throughout her years in Las Vegas. She did the crossword puzzle every day, read mystery novels, was an accomplished knitter, but her passion was bridge. It was not a good day if she could not play bridge at Siena Hills Assisted Living Community in Henderson, where she resided. Dottie had a magnetic personality, which included a sharp wit, and a gift for storytelling. She was a life member of Hadassah, a volunteer at Planned Parenthood, and at a local elementary school. Dottie's trademark was her oversized red glasses which when not on her face, hung around her neck. She was predeceased by her husband Norman Nathan, and her brothers, Dr. Robert Shapiro, and his wife Esther and Dr. Irving Cramer, and his wife Helen, and a sister, Sylvia Alpert and her husband Harold. She is survived by her three sons, Dr. Edward (Sandra) Nathan, Las Vegas, Stephen (Linda) Nathan, Pittsburgh, and Arte (Kathleen) Nathan, Las Vegas. She was very proud of her five grandchildren, Allyson Nathan, Ronna Goore, Scott Nathan, Rob Nathan, and Becky Lewis. She also cherished her 6 great grandchildren. Burial and a funeral service took place in Utica NY. A celebration of Dottie's life will take place from 2 pm to 4 pm, on Sunday, March 8, at the Summit in the Pinnacle Community Center, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd., Las Vegas, 89134. Donations in Dottie's memory can be made to the Temple Beth El Cemetery Fund, 2710 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13502, or to a charity of your choice
