Obituary of Marlene Simon

Marlene Roberta (Hornick) Simon, age 67, passed away July 3, 2013, in Henderson, Nevada. Marlene spent her childhood in Brooklyn and Laurelton, NY, and many years as a young wife and mother in North Massapequa, NY. Marlene married her husband and life-long partner, Stanley, immediately after graduating Queens College with a major in education. She and Stanley raised two children who loved their mother dearly, Julie (Simon) Miller and Andrew Simon. During their years in North Massapequa, Marlene focused on raising her children to be independent and open-minded, successfully battled Hodgkins lymphoma, studied for and received a Masters degree in special education at C.W. Post, spent time with extended family, and returned to work as a special education teacher, eventually becoming a supervisor. Also, during this time, Marlene started her first regular mah jong game and discovered that she was lucky during trips to Las Vegas to visit her son, Andrew. Marlene moved to Dana Point, CA, in 1995 and later to San Clemente, CA where she loved walking arm in arm with Stanley in Dana Point Harbor, looking out over the ocean and the golf-course view from her back patio, and began to satisfy her lifelong love of travel by taking frequent cruises with Stanley to destinations all over the world. Marlene always had a full roster of travel and excursions planned a year in advance. She doted on Julie's children, her granddaughters, Sara and Sabrina, and taught them to be bold and to enjoy life. Marlene and Stanley moved to Anthem in Henderson, Nevada, full time in 2012, after a year of splitting residence between California and Anthem. Marlene quickly immersed herself in the community playing mah jong several days a week, teaching novice players, and participating in the community's book club. She had eclectic tastes and looked forward to new events at the Smith Center, seeing shows, fine dining, going to the movies, and was an avid watcher of Meet the Press, and kept up with politics and current events. Marlene is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Stanley Simon. She is also survived by her son, Andrew Simon (Henderson, NV), her daughter and son-in-law, Julie Simon Miller and Daniel Miller (Bethesda, MD) and her grandchildren, Sara and Sabrina Miller. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Richard Ross, and was predeceased by her parents, Murray and Sylvia Hornick. The funeral will be held on Sunday, July 7, at 10:00 A.M. at Star of David Memorial Chapel in West Babylon, New York, and interment will be at Mt. Golda Cemetery in South Huntington Station, New York. Donations in Marlene's memory may be made to World Ort, at www.ort.org.
