I met Dave in an AA meeting in 1991. I really loved his serene presence..so, I sat with him whenever there was an open chair next to him. One particular meeting when we were sitting together, I mentioned that I was worried because I was cooking a pot roast and I had left it on so I wouldn't be late to the meeting. After a short pause Dave turned to me and said "is that pot roast I smell?". He instantly put me at ease and made me laugh
As I read through the other tributes to Dave it didn't surprise me at all that people he had worked with and known had wonderful memories of him. He was so easy to love. I've never forgotten Dave and am saddened to know he is gone. But I am forever grateful to have met him and shared time, smiles and sobriety with him.
You will be missed many.

David was such a great man. I always thought of him as a dad figure. He was kind and gave such great direction. My friend Patricia and I would race into AA rooms and try to sit next to him. Our joke was that you could just absorb the sobriety from him. He never missed an AA birthday for me until this year. I did not know he had passed away and I wondered why. Every year for 22 years he sent me a nice card to celebrate my time. Often with a nice starbucks card so I could share a cup of sobriety with another. So very sad to learn today that he had passed away in the fall. My heart goes out to Carrie and his family for the loss of someone so kind.

Dave was a friend and client of mine for over 40 years. We produced many programs for CF that we were both very proud of, spent quite a lot of time together on the road in the process, and became good friends. He knew every person who worked for me over the years and would walk around and say hello to each one when he visited. The were all sad to hear of his passing.
We stayed in touch even after he was no longer a client and shared many updates about our continuing family and personal ups and downs. He was a fine man and a great friend. I will miss him.
To Carrie and all his family I am sorry for your loss and I hope you will continue to get together every Summer down in Carmel and share your memories of him.
I will miss him with you,
Tony McCauley and the whole Full Spectrum family

I had the true pleasure of sharing sobriery journey's with Dave. We attended many meetings together and he showed me how to live life just one day at a time, to enjoy each moment, to "be where my feet are". His strength and encouragement was an inspiration to me and many others. He always had a smile and a kind word. I will miss him terribly and he will always walk with me on my continued spiritual and sober journey. Love you, Donut Dave!

I had the distinct pleasure of working for Dave for 6 years in the Training Department at Consolidated Freightways. We designed and developed a variety of training and leadership materials and programs. My favorite was the PMLD “Program for Management and Leadership Development.” Dave was the best leader and manager I ever had the privilege to serve during my 26 years with CF. Over all of the years until the day he passed, Dave always remembered my birthday. Dave was my mentor and lifelong friend. I will miss him so very much.

Growing up with Dave as a big brother was a lifetime of continuous adventures shown to us by someone who, from the very beginning, must have known what his calling was, and accepted the challenge of teaching two younger brothers, and a younger sister what to expect in the world when we went out to “play”. First in the neighborhood of our own block of Shell Street, in Hammond, Indiana, then when we were allowed to explore further down to the end of the block where he showed us the “big hill” that somehow just ended up in a perfect location for riding down with our bikes after he taught us how keep our balance without falling when we would hit White Oak Ave. with the jolt that became part of our indoctrination into childhood. The duration and excitement of summer by itself without any electronics at all, let alone computers, or cell phones, was enough, back then, to hold our interest until fall. Then, in the wintertime, Dave took us out and showed us how to ride down that same hill with our sleds. What a blast!
Now, of course, bikes and sleds were only the beginning of our lessons learned from Dave.
Here are a few other ropes and tassels Dave was destined to pass on to us:
The “Big” street. (Michigan St.), The “Store” (Nauracy’s), Roxana, the “other” store (I.G.A.),
Columbia Park, Columbia School, how to catch lizards, our “Bus Stop” and the 4A & 4B buses,
that took us to All Saints School, becoming an Altar Boy, how to raise guppies, & tropical fish,
how to raise hamsters, & pet rabbits, birds, big moths, he taught us how to fish. He also built us an outdoor “shack” from plywood. He taught us how to play basketball, which turned out to be his favorite sport, because he could always beat us! He taught us how to hang, seal, sand, and paint drywall when we converted our attic into a big bedroom. He showed us how to make a crystal radio, then later on he even made a broadcasting radio and had his own radio station. He eventually became a member of the Audio/Visual Club at Clark High School and was responsible for making tape recordings of contemporary music for dances that were held at Clark High School. He also taught me how to draw cars, how to lift weights, and got me started in magic, by showing me how to do card tricks and slight-of-hand magic. I will never forget when I was about 10, he showed me how to do a few card tricks, and he was very emphatic about teaching magic. He said anyone can learn how to do magic tricks, but in order to get good at it you must practice, practice, practice. He said to practice over and over in front of a mirror until you get to be flawless and you do it so quickly and smoothly that you can’t see yourself doing the trick part in the mirror, because what you see in the mirror is what the audience sees. So, I asked him then, when I was 10, “How can I practice all the time if I don’t have my own deck of cards? That was the first time I was touched by Dave’s generosity when he bought me a new deck of cards for my own. I know it does not seem like much, but for me, at ten years old to have my own brand-new deck of cards, it felt awesome!
Two other enviable qualities that Dave had were his obsessions for neatness, and promptness. He taught me how to be neat way back when he declared Saturdays were for cleaning & dusting our new upstairs bedroom. Occasionally, I remember how to be neat. I am still practicing. I am still trying to learn how to be on time. I know: practice, practice, practice!
I love you, Dave, and I miss you. Thank you for all the good things you have done for me and our family!
