Susan Burbank Starr: A Life Well Lived

Susan Starr, beloved mother and wife, passed at her home in Las Vegas NV in June 2018 following a long bout with cancer.

Since moving to Las Vegas in 1996, Susan Starr was active in the Las Vegas community. She assisted her husband William, who was Pastor of Las Vegas Family Church for 14 years from 1996 to 2009. Susan loved preparing meals and flower arrangements for church events and taking care of her children, friends, associates and business customers. Susan was a good friend of the American Clergy Leadership Conference and Ambassadors for Peace.

Susan was born in 1946 in Southern California as the eldest of three daughters of Ray and Trudy Burbank. From ages 3 to 9, she lived in Honduras with her parents, who were Quaker missionaries. Her family settled in Whittier CA, where Susan attended middle and high school. Susan attended George Fox College in Oregon and Azusa Pacific College in Southern CA.

In 1968, following a three-day spiritual experience embraced by God's love, Susan left Azusa Pacific in spring of her senior year and traveled to Berkeley CA. There, she heard the teachings of the Divine Principle for the first time and immediately joined the Unified Family in Berkeley and then San Francisco.

In 1973, Susan attended the International Leadership 100-Day Seminar in Barrytown, New York in preparation for a pioneer mission to Mexico inspired by the SF Director. She returned from her mission to the USA to support the Founder's Address at Yankee Stadium and Washington Monument in 1976. Susan then joined the church center in Wyoming before becoming church secretary in Washington DC and then in Los Angeles CA.

Susan and William Starr were matched by Father and Mother Moon, the founders of the Family Federation for Heavenly USA, in 1979 and married in the 6000 couples Blessing in Korea in 1982. Susan joined the International One World Crusade Team in CA in 1983. In 1984, Susan helped her husband pioneer a new Family Church in Tucson AZ. Father Moon appointed William as Arizona State Director in 1987, then as Missouri State Director in 1988. While in Arizona, Susan gave birth to three daughters--Jennie, Marlo, and Pattie--and in St. Louis, she had two sons--Will and Joshua.

In 1996, William accepted the position as Pastor of Las Vegas Family Church and Nevada State Director. Susan served as acting pastor of the church several times for one to two months while her husband was in New York, Washington DC and Korea helping with providential activity

Susan was active in the Blessing and Rededication of Marriage Ceremonies in many local churches over the years. She and her husband with their children personally officiated the rededication of 185 couples in their neighborhood as part of the worldwide 3.6 million Couples Blessing and Rededication. Susan supported National Parent's Day Celebrations on the fourth Sunday of July, which were co-sponsored locally by The Federation of Choirs, American Iranian Friendship Association, and Las Vegas Family Church.

Starting in 2008, Susan and other local members helped host the many visits of Father and Mother Moon to Las Vegas. Using her artistic talent, Susan created beautiful flower bouquets and arrangements for them.

Susan also traveled several times to help with international mission work. In 1990, Susan spent two months in Dakar, Senegal, Africa supporting the missionary work. In 1996, Susan was in Korea for two months, and she participated in Korean community outreach in Seoul in 2003. She also attended a 21-Day Registration Blessing Workshop in New York in 2006.

Susan was always busy taking care of her five children, who attended local and magnet middle and high schools and college in Las Vegas. Susan traveled to workshops with her children in Illinois, California, Colorado, New York, and Korea.

Susan is survived by her husband William in Las Vegas and five children--Jennie with husband Danial West in North Las Vegas, Marlo in Atlanta GA, Pattie with husband Shuichi Sugimori and granddaughter Celia in Farmington Hills MI, Will in Las Vegas, and Joshua with wife Naomi in San Diego CA. Also surviving are sister Beth with husband Bill Esler and son Kyran in Chicago and sister Nancy with husband Jon Spool and their children Hannah, Jonah with wife Alie, and Rachel in Seattle WA. Susan has cousins in Southern California, Oregon, and Ohio.
