Eleanor Sparer

Obituary of Eleanor Ruth Sparer

Eleanor Sparer, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Friday, May 4th at her home at Merrill Gardens in Henderson, Nevada. Born in Brooklyn, NY to Rosaline (Kitty) & Solomon Weingast, Eleanor and her younger brother Joe spent their childhood in Woodmere, NY. Eleanor loved life, her family, her friends, boating, the beach, classical music, the theater, the opera, bicycling, bowling and especially action movies. Eleanor attended Monrovia College and Syracuse University before marrying and raising her three sons, Steven, Jonathan and David in Woodmere, NY. The family spent every summer on the beach or on their boat, traveling all over Long Island, enjoying such ports as Fire Island, Tiana Bay and even out to Greenport on the east end of Long Island. Her 3 boys were the light of her life, even when they would ‘take over department stores’ in their youth. Eleanor spent her career working in office management, culminating as the office manager of DHL for many years at JFK Airport. She was privileged to fly on the Concord numerous times during her tenure. Upon retiring, Eleanor moved to Delray Beach, Florida, joining most of her childhood friends living within 10 miles of each other, enjoying the warm climate of southern Florida. The true testament to Eleanor’s love of people were her circle of lifelong friends that date back to elementary school.  There were so many of Eleanor’s school classmates retired in Florida that they held their high school reunion 1,300 miles from the school. Eleanor is survived by her children and their spouses, who she loved and cherished; Steven & Susan Sparer, Jonathan Sparer & John Klai and David Sparer; her grandchildren and their spouses; Philip Sparer & Elaine Gebel, Zachary Sparer & fiancé Katerina Satanovsky and Alison & Jimmy Mulligan as well as 7 great-grandchildren (+ 1 on the way); her brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Sybil Weingast; 3 nieces and 3 nephews; 8 great-nieces and 6 great-nephews. Eleanor is preceded in death by her mother Kitty and father Sol, her daughter-in-law Mary Sparer and her longtime companion Joe Brooks. A Celebration of Life will be held in New York on Sunday, June 24th, at Temple Emanu-El, 180 Piermont Road. Closter, NJ 07624.  The service will start promptly at 10:45, followed by a Brunch.  The family is requesting donations in lieu of flowers and suggest the MS Society (through alisonsparer.com), Parkinson Research, Alzheimer’s Research or the Association for the Blind. Mom, Grandma, Grandma Elephant, Momanor, Grammypants, Aunt Eleanor and GG (great grandma) will be greatly missed. Her smile and sparkle in her eyes will be in our hearts forever.
