Obituary of Gertrude Mary Thorpe

Gertrude Mary Thorpe, Age 93 of Las Vegas, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 24th, 1923 to parents Alexander George Deven and Mary Leahy. Both of her parents died when she was a young child and she was taken in by her aunt and uncle until she turned 18. She had one older brother, George Deven, who is now deceased. Mary graduated nursing school in June of 1944 at the Cathedral of Newark. She immediately enlisted in the army during WWII which is where she met her husband, John G.K. Thorpe. Once married, Mary received an honorable discharge from the army and frequently relocated due to her husband’s military status. Mary had many interests in life and was always trying to better herself through education. She loved to travel, read books, and excel as a nurse. Mary was also an active member of the Catholic Church. Mary devoted much of her time and energy as a caregiver to family members throughout her entire life. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt to all who loved her. She is survived by her children Janet Beatrice Kiester Thorpe, William Charles Kiester Thorpe, Donald Paul Kiester Thorpe, and Ann Deven Kiester Thorpe. Services will be held on Saturday, November 5, at the Kraft and Sussman Funeral Services from 4-7pm. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day… unseen, unheard but always near, still missed and very dear.” –Unknown
