Dad, today marks the 3rd year anniversary of your passing. Mom and I miss you more and more with each passing day. I truly can't express in words how grateful I am to have had you as my father and best friend. Every day I strive to live life the way you did. You loved life and made the most of each day. No matter how challenging life could be at times, you remained strong and optimistic. Mom and I are so grateful for the many wonderful memories we shared with you. I love you with all my heart!!! XOXO

Daddy, I can't imagine what this Christmas is going to be like to not have you physically with us. Ever since I returned to work in September after your memorial and celebration of life gathering, I look at the photograph of you, Mom, and me (that I have on my office desk) throughout the day. Earlier this week it started snowing. As I was watching the snow fall from my office window that looks out into the garden at the hospital, "Grown Up Christmas List" sung by Michael Buble came on the radio. Tears immediately filled my eyes. We love you and miss you soooooo much!!!! XOXOXO

When Lyn and I first moved into the neighborhood earlier this year, Dennis was the first to greet us with his warm smile. We knew instantly we were going to enjoy being his next door neighbor. After seeing my license plates, Dennis quickly learned that we had much in common being both military veterans and later finding out that we were/are also employees at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). He was so kind to us that he even offered us a bottle of his wine that he made, and another several weeks later. He got a kick when we told him how unexpectedly strong that first bottle was after it got us feeling good :)
Everytime we saw Dennis, he always seemed so happy, never a frown on his face. He would smile and wave each time we drove by. We really enjoyed talking to him. We were devastated to learn the news after we had got back from our overseas vacation. We never got the chance to see him again. We never got to return the favor with those bottles of wine he gave. Which we will now keep forever in memory of him.
Dennis.. you will be missed. The neighborhood won't be the same without you. Rest in Paradise Marine
Respectfully,
Francis & Lyn Simon

Cheryl,
At work, I was always happy to see your Dad. He would stop by, ask how things are going, always had a big smile, and was extremely proud of you. I enjoyed hearing what you were up to. I liked the pictures of your Dad especially when he is smiling - "infectious smile".
My prayers and condolences to the Gustafson family and friends.

My birth father was a Vietnam veteran, just like Dennis was. However, my father was KIA before I was born. I was adopted by a wonderful family, but when I turned 26, I needed to find out the answers to my medical history.
When I found out my father had been killed in Vietnam, I began reaching out to other veterans to try to get answers. The organization that Dennis loved so much - Pop A Smoke - was an integral part of my search. Those men came forward in the hundreds, if not thousands, to help me find my answers. I ended up writing about my journey as a way to say thank you.
I first met Dennis in 2006 at a Pop A Smoke reunion where he purchased my book and subsequently sent me a very touching email. I still have that email and it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Dennis supported my journey in any way he possibly could, and even shared my story with his family.
I was so happy to see him again at future reunions and to meet his daughter, Cheryl. I loved seeing how proud Dennis was of her. And I loved that she loved that part of his life and enjoyed meeting his veteran friends. I can assure her that it meant the world to everyone she met.
Seeing all their pictures together running marathons, going to Disneyworld, and just sharing a wonderful life and wonderful bond was so inspiring. And, in some way, made me feel close to my dad knowing that we would have had a relationship like that.
In that first email, Dennis called my father a hero. But, I can assure everyone, Dennis was also a hero to me.
Semper Fi, my friend. You will never be forgotten.
Stephanie

Dennis proudly enlisted in the USMC in 1965. In this photo, Dennis is in his dress blues with his mother Ellen Carlson Gustafson. He always put his family first!!! When his father unexpectedly passed away in 1968, Dennis was on duty in South Vietnam. Dennis was adamant about being there for his mother and the rest of the family; therefore, he flew home in the back of a cargo plane.
