Obituary of Harold "Skip" Franklin Hintz

Harold "Skip" Franklin Hintz, age 78, of Ithaca NY, went to be with His Lord and Savior on Friday, April 8, 2016 in Las Vegas, NV. Skip was born on October 28, 1937 in Frank, OH to the late Harry and the late Madelyn (Reitzel) Hintz and was proud to be raised on a livestock farm. Skip attended The Ohio State University, earning a BS in Animal Science, and then Cornell University, where he earned an MS and PhD in Animal Nutrition. From 1964 to 1967, he was an Assistant Professor of Animal Science (swine nutrition) at the University of California, Davis. In 1967, he joined the equine research program at Cornell, a joint program of the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. While at Cornell, he was a Professor of Animal Nutrition from 1979 - 2005. He was also the Chairman of the Animal Science Dept. from 1991 - 1997. When he retired in 2005, he was named Professor Emeritus at Cornell University. During his career, Skip authored and co-authored countless publications. Among his numerous recognitions were induction into the Equine Research Hall of Fame; past president of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition; past president of the Equine Nutrition Physiology Society; a member of the American Association of Equine Sports Medicine Board of Directors; the 1991 Amoco Faculty Award for Teaching; and being inducted as a member of The Ohio State University Hall of Fame. He was a member of Alpha Zeta Fraternity and a long time active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder for many years. Skip had a great, witty sense of humor and a big, wonderful smile. He loved working with his students at Cornell. He was a humble and faithful servant of the Lord. He also enjoyed western movies, country music, reading, and birding. Skip is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sandra Jean Hintz (nee Hendrickson), the absolute love of his life; Amy Marie Eiden (Joseph) from Ocoee, Florida, Christopher Charles Hintz (Laurie) from Cumming, Georgia, and Kimberly Jean Hintz from Charlotte, NC; beloved grandchildren Alex Joseph Eiden, Cassandra Marie Eiden, Ryan Charles Hintz and Chase Caldwell Hintz; siblings Helen Marie Hintz from Norwalk, OH and Richard Lee Hintz (Candace) from Defiance, MO; sister in law Janet Lou Bush; aunt Irene Reitzel; and many special nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Steven Carl Hintz. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 6 – 8 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 149 Honness Lane, Ithaca, NY 14850. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 11:00, with Pastor Robert Foote officiating, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 149 Honness Lane, Ithaca, NY 14850.
