Obituary of Carol Lee Klatt

Carol L Klatt (Hughes) passed away in Las Vegas January 20, 2016 after a brief illness. Carol was born October 12, 1938 in Los Angeles to Richard and Beatrice (Horn) Hughes. Her parents and brother, Richard, preceded her in death. Carol married John Klatt in a civil ceremony October 15, 1957 and in a religious ceremony April 12, 1958. After living in San Francisco and San Rafael, they settled in Daly City where they raised their three children. Carol's interest in local affairs led to her deep engagement in the life of Daly City non-profits and politics. Carol took her interest in the well-being of the community very seriously and served on the City Council of Daly City for 21 years, including five terms as Mayor. Carol never wavered in doing what she felt was in the best interest of the city and its residents, taking stands that were sometimes controversial but always taken after deep and thorough study of the issues before her. She was deeply engaged in a host of community-based organizations; she co-founded the Daly City Dining Center, was the first woman to serve as President of the Daly City Lions Club, and was a long-time volunteer and supporter of Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center, to name just a few. As she did in her personal life, Carol's professional life in politics was lived with deep commitment and humility. Carol chose to retire when her term expired in 2014. She and John moved to Las Vegas where they settled in quickly, making new friends and enjoying a new life in the desert. Carol is survived by her husband of 58 years, John, daughters Deborah Baltaji (Mohammad) of Qatar and Kimberly Defino (Anthony) of St Louis, son Anthony (Tim Hanlon) of Las Vegas, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. At Carol's request, no services will be held.
