Bernie Rosenberg

Obituary of Bernie Rosenberg

I. Bernard Rosenberg was born to Morris and Bessie Rosenberg in Brooklyn, New York in 1922. When he was a young child the family moved to Passaic, New Jersey where they opened the popular Rosenberg Delicatessen. The whole family helped run the restaurant, including Bernie, the youngest of the family's three children. In 1944 Bernie, as he was known throughout his life, was drafted into the army and was assigned to the 654 Tank Destroyer Battalion. The Battalion was scheduled to participate in D-Day but was stranded when another Battalion, which was completely lost in the conflict, launched with the 654's equipment. After landing at Utah Beach on July 31, the Battalion pushed through France, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and continued on into Germany. At one point in the conflict Bernie, who spoke Yiddish, was asked to help translate an interview with a German soldier. When he returned, the farmhouse his company had taken shelter in had been completely destroyed by a bomb. Bernie, was married to Sara Schneiderman in 1948. They had their first date after their mothers arranged for them to meet when Sara was looking for a Sadie Hawkins date for a dance. They dated for six months and Sara always said that if she couldn't marry Bernie, she wouldn't marry anyone. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary last year. They moved to Clifton, New Jersey where they lived for 34 years raising their three sons, Neil, Steven and Paul. Before his first retirement in 1985, Bernie worked in his brother Richie's restaurant beverage supply company travelling extensively throughout New Jersey and New York. Sara and Bernie retired to Las Vegas where they have lived for 27 years. They both loved the Las Vegas lifestyle but Bernie, who was used to working 6 days a week, soon found work at the Gold Coast Casino. He loved the mix of people he met in his work at the Casino and continued to work full time for another 20 years, finally fully retiring at the age of 88. Above all else, Bernie is remembered for his abundant kindness. He was a person who never had an unkind word to say about anyone and loved nothing more than to listen attentively to the life story of someone he had just met. Bernie Rosenberg is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Irma, Richard, and Charles. He is survived by his wife Sara, his sons Neil Rosenberg, Portland, Oregon, Steven Rosenberg and his wife Rebecca Biggs of Portland, Oregon and Paul Rosenberg. In addition he has three Grandsons Lee Luchs, Cal Rosenberg and Zeke Rosenberg.
