I am beyond words of losing my beloved Outdoor dad Dr. Brownridge. Truly somebody I loved learning from and could answer any question I could toss at him, his knowledge and dedication to excellence in both education and the outdoors is unparalleled. I used to love just coming over to your house and hanging out with him as he would show me all his maps, gadgets and outdoor stuff. In our Geography, Geology and Astronomy class he could not find a text book which correctly taught everything in System International so he would spend the time and make one page handouts for class which accurately taught us the material - very unique and truly a class act! On trips to go mountaineering he loved exploring areas which were unknown and took us Orme kids on those adventures - it was always an exciting and fun time. He loved teaching to his students and always made sure we knew our material. Dennis kinda took me under his wing at Orme, and I am sure that although I must have exhausted him with my questions, I always found his quest for knowledge fascinating. He made a profound difference in my life for the better, and I will always cherish our times at Orme and the outdoors.

From Jack Gaffey
Dennis's Jeep
When we were in college, Dennis had an old US Army jeep that we loved
riding around the California desert in. On one of these trips, as we
were approaching a one-lane bridge over a dry arroyo, an old desert
rat in a rusty pickup truck sped up and entered the bridge first,
blocking our passage. The driver then leaned out the window and
sneered "I never back up for an idiot" to which Dennis replied "I
always do." Dennis backed off the bridge and waved to the driver. We
all laughed!
Freight Train Trip
In June and July of 1970 Dennis, Alan Glasser and I rode freight
trains from San Bernardino to Denver, sleeping in boxcars and sharing
food with hobos. After spending a few days in Denver, Alan took the
bus home and Dennis and I rode freight trains back. We had a number of
adventures along the way, some were a little bit frightening like when
we were chased by the railroad detective in Albuquerque, and some were
heart warming as when a hobo shared with us what little food he had.
Dennis and I hopped off the freight train in El Monte, CA, to avoid
going all the way to Los Angeles, where we could be more easily
spotted. After we walked out of the railroad yard Dennis called his
mother to come and get us. I guess she was used to Dennis' unusual
adventures because she came, picked up these two dirty railroad hobos,
and asked no questions.
I will miss you, Dennis, and thank you for all the great times we shared. ❤

A Memory of Dennis............The Date
Dennis and I were roommates at U.C. Riverside on Steinbrau hall during the academic year 1965 - 1966. We Steinbrau guys didn't date much, but on one occasion in Spring of 1966 I had a date with Valerie Chase, whom many of the Steinbrau guys knew. I didn't want Dennis to know I was going out on a date, and I especially didn't want him to know who the date was with. So, on the night in question, I sneaked out in my VW Beetle, picked up Val, and we drove to downtown Riverside to see a movie.. We returned to the car after the movie, I turned the key in the ignition, and.....E-E-E-E-E-BANG!!, followed by an acrid smell of smoke, issued forth from the Beetle's engine compartment. After a shocked moment of silence, Val and I turned to each other and simultaneously exclaimed, "Brownridge!" Yes, he and Duane Fojt had done the deed. But I had the last laugh...in their haste to wire up the Beetle and conceal themselves for the fireworks, they neglected to see who it was that I was with. I finally told Dennis a few weeks later.
There was never a dull moment at UCR when Dennis was around!

My condolences to you both, Alyce and Ellie. I am so sorry for your loss. When I heard the news I couldn’t help thinking of Dennis scaling those Red Rock cliffs like a true mountain “goat.” I will always admire his dedication to the wilderness and he love and passion to protect it for future generations. He was a wonderful person.
