Thomas Mueller

Obituary of Thomas Joseph Mueller

Thomas Joseph Mueller was born July 18th, 1940, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the ninth child of eleven to Julius H. Mueller and Gladys Gertrude (Schmidt) Mueller.

He attended St Theresa’s Catholic school in Hutchinson, Kansas, and graduated in 1958. Tom was a devout Catholic, who also had a devotion to the Holy Rosary. He attended mass regularly and insisted in always sitting in the front near the musician.

A Navy veteran, Tom was an entrepreneur in Kansas, Colorado and Nevada. In 1990, Tom and his family moved to Las Vegas and soon after purchased a small family business called Vegas Propane and built the business up for 30 years, never retiring from day-to-day operations.

Tom and his wife, Carroll Jane (Gommel) Mueller, have a second home in Telluride, Colorado, where he spent his summers in the Rockies, taking in music festivals, car shows, hikes and adventures with his children and grandchildren. He skied for the last time in 2003 but never tired of enjoying the mountains as long as it was above 55 degrees.

An avid gardener, Tom is known in the neighborhood for his desert yard full of cacti, roses, yard sculptures, and vegetables as well as fun at the block parties. He never passed up a chance to buy illegal fireworks, attend the Kansas State Fair, support a local art show, add to his kitchen gadget collection and drink good beer.

Thomas Joseph Mueller, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Entrepreneur, and Owner of Vegas Propane, was called to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 17th, 2021, in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. Unable to hold him back from getting out and living his life to the fullest even in a pandemic, Tom celebrated life with his employees and family before contracting COVID-19.  After two weeks fighting valiantly, he let go peacefully with family at his side.

Those left to cherish his precious memories are his beloved wife, Carroll Jane (Gommel) Mueller and their three children; Elizabeth Mueller, Amy (Mueller) Lanza and Thomas Mueller II, as well as three grandchildren he cherished; Sofia Noelle and Leo Anthony Joseph Lanza and Rainer Thomas Baum Mueller, three sisters; Mary Ellen (Mueller) Bishop, Barbara (Mueller) Warriner and Janie (Mueller) Riggs and two brothers, Jerry Mueller and Kenneth Mueller.  There are five grand-dogs under 25lbs that will miss his generous treats that come straight from the bacon pan.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider “What would Tom do?” and pay it forward by doing random acts of kindness such as dressing a homeless man, sharing cold cash and a sandwich with a stranger, giving the neighbor kid a $20 bill for a glass of lemonade, and, back in the day, a ride for a Kansas hitchhiker. All things Tom did and so much more.

Celebrate Tom’s endless energy and zest for life at an in-person rosary at 12:30pm PT followed by Funeral Mass service at 1:00pm PT on February 1st, 2021 at Our Lady of Las Vegas.
