Obituary of Bertha Josefina Szilady
Bertha Josefina Szilady passed away September 26, 2020 in Las Vegas Nevada. She was born October 8, 1934, the youngest of three daughters to Miguel A. Rendón and Alicia Ferráez de Rendón in Mexico City. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Silvia Pastrana and Maria Elena Castillo and husband Rudy Szilady, daughter Magaly De La Paz Proenza, and son Robert Fernandez. She is survived by her daughter Frida De La Paz Bjelke (Scott) and sons Enrique “Kike” De La Paz (Diane), Alberto De La Paz (Karen), Edward “Eddy” Fernandez, and Mark Fernandez (Yessica). She has a wonderful posterity of 7 children, 28 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 20 spouses in-law, equaling 89 people.
She emigrated to the United States in 1968 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These two decisions she considered her greatest gifts to her family whose lives were profoundly changed by them. She became a naturalized US citizen and taught her children to love this country. She became a missionary for her church serving in the Mexico City and Washington DC Temple Missions and also several local missions as an employment specialist at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Las Vegas helping the Spanish-speaking community. Bertha loved being a “member missionary” spreading the gospel she loved to family, friends and strangers alike. She was very proud of being one of the 17 missionaries (so far) in her family who have served formal missions.
She loved her dog, Tiki, and everyone else’s dogs too! She loved to paint and dance and shared those talents with her children, grand and great-grandchildren. Bertha had a great interest in genealogy and did a lot of work for her family in that area. She was generous and fun-loving and a loyal and supportive friend. All who knew her were strengthened by their relationship with her because she had a strong, courageous, and loving spirit.
