Obituary of Jack Lee Kane

Jack Lee Kane, 67, of Las Vegas died at his home on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 following a six-year fight against cancer. Dr. Kane was born August 25, 1943 to the late Matthew and Leona Kane. An Indianapolis native and resident for more than 50 years prior to moving to Nevada, he graduated from Indiana University, and Indiana University School of Medicine. He practiced medicine first as an internist in the U.S. Navy, based in Cherry Point, North Carolina, and then as an ophthalmologist in private practice in Indianapolis. Most recently, he was affiliated with the Shepherd Eye Center. A lifelong learner, he completed a law degree in 1998, and in addition to seeing patients he began a national medical-legal consultancy. As accomplished and respected as he was as a physician, Dr. Kane was equally regarded and admired for his jovial approach to life as well as his insightful mind. Once a write-in candidate for mayor of Indianapolis, he received so many votes that reporters called to ask if he planned to campaign in earnest. Renowned for his creative storytelling, he parlayed this into a formal hobby and over time authored eight books, including two guides to playing craps - a favorite pastime. He had a soft spot in his heart for animals, and was the doting guardian to his toy poodle, Stephanie, for more than 18 years. But above all, he was devoted to his family and a loyal friend, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with those he loved whether at home or while traveling the globe. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Patricia Kane; daughter Tanya and husband John of Las Vegas, NV; son Steven and wife Carey of Brooklyn, NY; sisters Brenda Shapiro of Las Vegas, NV and Helaine Nesser of Columbus, OH; grandchildren Madeleine and Elliot; nieces Jenifer and Jodi, and nephews David, Michael, and Joshua. Services will be private. To commemorate Dr. Kane, a celebration of his life will be held in the near future. Those wishing to honor Dr. Kane's legacy and memory are asked to contribute to a cancer research organization of their choice.
