Obituary of Harvey Jay Golden

Harvey Jay Golden passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at his home in Henderson, NV at the age of 85. Harvey was born on May 29, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY. At the age of 12 or 13, his family moved to Philadelphia, PA, where Harvey graduated from Central High School in 1952. He attended Temple University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956. In that same year, Harvey served as a cryptographer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. He performed his duties until 1958, at which point he returned to Philadelphia. He worked for a couple of mortgage companies for a few years, but strove to become a teacher. In 1963, his teaching career began with the School District of Philadelphia. Another turning point occurred just two years later, when on September 1, 1965, Harvey married Ruth Abrams in Cheltenham, PA. She too was a teacher in the same school district. As Harvey taught, he continued his studies at Temple University. He earned a Master of Education from Temple in 1969, in addition to his Pennsylvania State Teaching Certificate - Elementary Education in the same year. In following years, Harvey earned Graduate College Credits +60 at the Senior Career Teaching Level. He retired as a middle school mathematics teacher in 1985. After Ruth retired (also as a teacher for the School District of Philadelphia) a few years later, they moved to the Richmond, VA area, and then to Henderson, NV in 1998. While in Henderson, Harvey was an active member of Congregation Ner Tamid, where he belonged to the Minyan for several years and made many friends. Harvey enjoyed watching baseball and football – but later he discovered hockey, which became his favorite. He was involved with the Senior Center in Henderson, where he went to socialize and have lunch with friends. He also continued to be involved with prayer study through the Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment) in Virginia for the last 22 years. While his accomplishments and hobbies are numerous, it is Harvey's kindness and sincerity that he exuded to all whom he knew that will never be forgotten. Harvey is survived by his wife, Ruth Abrams Golden, and by his son, Eric Golden, and his daughter-in-law, Raffaella DeFilippo. A virtual memorial service was held in his honor on Thursday, April 23, 2020 at 9:00 AM, led by Rabbi Sanford Akselrad and Cantor Jessica Hutchings, at Congregation Ner Tamid. His interment is in the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Boulder City, NV.
