Obituary of Beatriz Ocampo Rupani

Beatriz "Betty" Ocampo Rupani, mother of five, loving wife, and bowling partner to Vashdev "Vasu" Bhagwandas Rupani, passed away on August 13, 2019, 1:50pm. She was born to Conchita and Pedro Ocampo on February 17, 1939, in Malate, Manila, The Philippines. Betty grew up with a pencil in her hand, capable of drawing cartoon characters from memory. She trained to be a teacher, but decided to move to Tokyo in 1962 when her friend Cora Gorgod asked her to join her at the Philippine Reparations Office (precursor to the Philippine Embassy) as an auditor. Betty met Vasu in the cafeteria at the Asia Center. He likened her to Audrey Hepburn; she thought he looked like Elliot Gould. They fell in love May 10, 1970, and a few years later, they got married during their lunch break, and built a life together for the next 49 years. She was famous for her chicken curry, her spring rolls, her adobo, her sinigang, and her beef stew. She crafted impressively scary masks out of cardboard, made origami eggs, illustrated her children's numerous projects, and created beautiful beaded jewelry. She was a sweet, generous, and loving mother to five children. She spoiled her children by cooking delicious meals from all over the world and was always willing to bicycle to school with a thermos of spaghetti to deliver lunch to the envy of all her kids' friends. Betty was quick to laugh and joke, always caring and willing to lend a hand, and through her correspondence, she made sure to let you know she was thinking of you. Vasu and the Rupani kids would like to thank Betty's wonderful caregivers: Gemma, Wanida, Bo, and from Senior Helpers: Jazmin, Virginia, and Nanette. We would also like to thank the wonderful people at Nathan Adelson and the staff at the Philippine Consulate. Betty was predeceased by her brothers, Rodolfo "Totie" Ocampo and Manuel "Babing" Ocampo. She is survived by her husband Vashdev; her children Sheela, Sylvia, Savina, Sayuri, and Vikram; her daughter-in-law Louise; her sons-in-law Adam, Jeff, and Tim; her grandchildren Kayla, Neil, and Aidan; her brother Jesus "Boy" Ocampo; her nephew Roberto Ocampo; the Ocampo and Rupani families and friends from all over the world. In lieu of flowers, we welcome a donation in Betty's name to CurePSP.org (https://bit.ly/2kxLMFO)
