Obituary of Dr. Thomas Shalvey

Thomas J Shalvey, Ph.D.

1937 - 2018

Dr. Thomas "Tommy" J Shalvey, 80, of Las Vegas and Portland, Oregon, passed away on Saturday March 3, 2018.  Tommy was born July 3, 1937 in the Highbridge section of the Bronx, New York, to the late Thomas J and the late Margaretta V (Hayes) Shalvey.  Though Tommy was their only child he enjoyed the company of dearly loved cousins and family friends.

Tommy was thoroughly nourished throughout life by his academic career and related passions.  In his youth he attended Sacred Heart School and Fordham Prep in New York City. He spent the years 1955 to 1965 as a Jesuit of the Northeast Province of the Jesuits, and taught in the last three of those ten years at Fordham University, on the Bronx campus. His Ph.D in Philosophy is from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  Many years later he became a Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Southern Connecticut State University where he taught from 1968-1997.

His Irish heritage brought him a keen wit and a love for story telling, and often as not with a wee bit o' blarney to round out the tale. Tommy was a voracious reader and avid collector of objets d'art - his homes in Las Vegas and Portland filled to the rafters with great books of art, literature and treasures from his travels near and far. Tommy, you are loved.

Tommy will be buried at this cemetery next to his beloved parents and near so many wonderful memories of family, friends and places that had enriched his life. The  funeral services date and time are to be determined, please call Fred H. McGrath and Son:914-337-6770, for more information.
