Obituary of Gilbert Stern

Gilbert (Gil) Stern, age 84, of Las Vegas died Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Mr. Stern was born October 21, 1933 in Chicago, IL. to Charles and Jennie Stern and previously resided in Skokie, IL. He was married on January 27, 1963 to the late Rhoda Popoff Stern. He joined the Army after high school. Then he received his college degree from Columbia College in Chicago. He worked in the advertising industry. He enjoyed writing comedy and mystery stories. His quips regularly appeared in "Kup's Column" in the Chicago Sun Times and his jokes often were used by Jay Leno in The Tonight Show monologues. His short stories and mystery stories often appeared in magazines such as Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Readers' Digest. He was preceded in death by his wife Rhoda Popoff Stern, who passed away on April 5, 2015; a son, Jay Allen Stern, who passed away on September 20, 2016; and two siblings, Benny Stern and Ruth Stern Winkel. He is survived by a daughter, Julie Stern Manello, a son-in-law, Carl Manello and grandchildren, Jacob and Rebecca Manello. A graveside service will be held 11:00 am on Friday, February 23 at Bunkers Memory Gardens Cemetery, 7251 W. Lone Mountain Road, Las Vegas, NV with Rabbi Hershel Brooks officiating. Charitable donations to honor Gilbert's memory can be made to organizations supporting cancer research, diabetes research, or heart research.
