Obituary of Helen Lorena Scungio

Helen Lorena West Scungio passed away at the age of 76 on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She resided in the area for over 20 years. Helen was born on February 19, 1941 in Waco, Texas to William Homer West and Lillie Missouri Jones West. She was the fifth of six children. She attended Lakeview Elementary School and Connally High School in Waco, Texas. Helen was a talented interior designer, a floral designer, a gourmet cook and baker, and an excellent seamstress and quilter. Her granddaughters loved the fancy dresses, hair bows and matching doll dresses she made for them. She also hand quilted many beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren. Helen met the love of her life, Vincent Anthony Scungio, from New Castle, Pennsylvania who was stationed at Connally Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. They were married in December of 1957 and had four children, Audrey Lyne Scungio Hunter (Florida), Pamela Jean Scungio Mattia (Arizona), Vincent Anthony Scungio Jr. (Michigan), and Cherie Ann Scungio Sheppard (California). Helen's husband Vincent was an Electronic Warfare Officer on an F-105F Thunderchief. His plane was shot down in North Vietnam in 1966. His body was never recovered. Helen remarried in 1969 and had another daughter, Laurie Danielle Kintner Reinke (Germany). Helen is survived by her five children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Lillian Faye Nawara and Mary Evelyn Hupp; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by her favorite uncle, Robert Jones, who was lovingly called "Uncle Bob". Helen's final wish was for her ashes to be scattered over the Pacific Ocean. We will honor her wish later this year.
