Marie Joyce Vellis passed away peacefully on June 12, 2021. She was born to George and Calliope Vellis in Monterey, California, on November 11,1937. She is survived by two sisters, Joanne Martin of Campbell, CA, and Demetria (Gary) Van Rossum of Turlock, CA and longtime friend Barbara Robertson of Las Vegas, NV. Preceding her in death were sisters Thalia (Kathy) King, Evangeline Vellis, and brother Anthony Vellis. Marie graduated from Monterey Union High School in 1955. She enlisted in the US Navy, where she served with excellence and distinction for thirty years. She graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Business while serving the Navy. Marie's many duty stations included Naples, Italy; Bahrain; Orlando, Florida; Bainbridge, Maryland; and Treasure Island, California, where she retired as the Command Master Chief Petty Officer. Further serving her country in a civil service position for the Department of the Treasury, Marie continued working another eighteen years in San Jose, CA. After retiring in Las Vegas, Marie volunteered with several veteran's groups, including Women Veterans of Nevada and Nevada Gems. Marie's favorite pastimes were Sudoku, walking and playing with her dog Billy, and an occasional trip to a casino for Four Card Keno or a horse race. Services will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City on Thursday, June 17, at 10:40am.
