How to Dress for a Funeral at North Las Vegas, NV Funeral Homes

When most people think about what they should wear at a funeral, their natural inclination will be to dress in black. This is a good rule of thumb, and indeed, some religious denominations teach that mourners should wear black. However, if you’re going to be attending a service at North Las Vegas, NV funeral homes that aren’t specifically religious, you might be wondering how you should dress

“Wear black” is actually a solid stand-in for the cardinal rule of ordinary funeral attire – you should dress in a way that doesn’t draw attention to yourself. You want to blend in, to be respectful of the deceased and the other people who have gathered to remember and mourn him or her.

At first glance, men have it easier. Dark blazers or jackets and pants are natural, everyday wear for a lot of men when going to work. Men should take heed to avoid bright ties, however. Jewelry or accessories which might imply ostentation, such as certain types of cufflinks or belt buckles, should also not be worn.

Women should try to avoid attire which is too revealing of their figures or jewelry that attracts too much attention. They should also ditch high heels for the occasion, especially if there’s going to be a procession to the cemetery for burial after the funeral service. This is because high heels will obviously increase the risk that women will wind up tripping in the grass they walk in. Heels should be kept at or below two inches. A better choice would be to simply wear flat shoes.

Guests of both genders should avoid excessive perfume or cologne. Be respectful of others in attendance.

While these are good rules to follow on most occasions, they also aren’t set in stone. Some things will supersede them. For example, if the family requests that guests at the funeral service wear certain garb, those requests should obviously be honored. Some families might request more bright or festive attire because they want to create an atmosphere that celebrates their loved one. An increasing number of memorial services are held in outdoor or nontraditional venues, especially in an era where direct cremations are increasing rapidly in popularity. If you’re going to attend a memorial service at a beach, for example, you probably won’t be keen on wearing a dark suit!

Always feel free to talk to the family of the deceased if you’re confused about what attire they wish guests to wear at the funeral or memorial service.
