Obituary of Armstrong Manly Dowell

Armstrong Manly Dowell, Jr., age 88, of North Las Vegas, died Thursday, November 5, 2009. Army was born August 29, 1921 in Torrance, CA. He is the son of the late Armstrong Manly and the late Ola (Thompson) Dowell. He attended UCLA and earned a Masters in Zoology. He went into the Navy after his first three years of college and served as a Pharmacists Mate. While in the Navy, during WWII from 06/29/1942 to 02/19/1946, he earned a number of honors including Asiatic-Pacific Area, 3 Stars; American Area, Philippine Liberation, 1 Star; Victory Medal, WWII. After completing his education Army worked for the Hughes Corporation as a Materials Engineer for 33 years. While there, he published 4 scientific papers in material engineering and one in zoology. His greatest joys were his late wife, Frances, and raising his two boys, Bruce and Roger. Army was District Commissioner of Orange Empire Boy Scouts and was an Eagle Scout. He collected Native American art and coins and spent the past number of years writing a biography to share with his family. Army was a kind, generous and philanthropic man who will be greatly missed by his two sons: Roger (Terry) Dowell of North Las Vegas, NV and Bruce (Kathleen) Dowell of Crestline, CA; his brother: James (Betty) Dowell of Chula Vista, CA; his granddaughter, Sarah Dowell of Phelan, CA; his fianc, Evelyn Sago of Las Vegas; his close friends, Cheryl and Terry Sago of Las Vegas, as well as many relatives around the country. The funeral will be held at Southern Nevada Veterans Cemetery, 1900 Buchanan Blvd., Boulder City, NV with His Son Bruce officiating, on Monday, November 9 at 10:40 am. . .
