Obituary of Terry Jay Cohen

Terry Jay Cohen, age 71, of Las Vegas, died Friday, March 23, 2018. Terry was born September 17, 1946 in Sioux City, IA to the late Arthur Noel and the late Anne (Lebowich) Cohen. He is survived by his devoted brother, Bart and his cherished Aunt Marilyn and her family. Terry lived in Las Vegas as a young boy, but moved back and forth to California with his family. He finished his schooling in California, graduating from San Maria High School in California. After high school, Terry went to college in California but was soon drafted and served in the Army, where he was stationed in Germany. In Germany, Terry was able to travel through Europe and to Israel with his mother while he was on leave. After his Army duty, Terry returned to Las Vegas, where he started his own design firm, along with two other partners called, Imagination in Concept, opening in 1975. Eventually, Terry opened Sydni Jay and Associates with his partner Samantha. It was located on South Highland. There he had a full library of design and decoration which focused on both residential and commercial design work. They trained multiple up and coming interior designers. It became a well-known and prominent design studio in Las Vegas for over 30 years, creating and decorating homes and businesses for many clients in Las Vegas, as well as California, New York and Mexico. His design firm won multiple awards and was voted the best in Las Vegas. He was a member and an officer of ASID and ISID during his illustrious career. He was "married" to his business but was always there for a friend in trouble. Terry generously gave encouragement and guidance to young designers helping them to launch their careers. He found great fun and enjoyment in shopping, be it in Las Vegas, New York, Prague, London or San Diego. Terry loved going to New York, for a number of years, to see Broadway shows. He is survived by his brother Bart Cohen and Aunt, plus numerous friends. His immediate family may be small, but his extended family of friends was quite all-encompassing. He has left a legacy, both professionally and personally, that will be dearly missed and forever remembered by many who knew him. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 3rd, 12:00pm at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, Nevada. The burial will be immediately following the service. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Donations in Terry's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
