Dr. Reitz was the smartest person I have ever known. Quite simply, his brain functioned differently than most. It was like he had his own personal computer stored up there in his head and could recall facts and events effortlessly. Dr. Reitz was also a master communicator. He was amazing with words, and there was never any question what he was trying to convey. In addition to his brilliance I marveled at his ability to stay positive and remain driven and calm during tough times. It was obvious he enjoyed the challenges of owning his own business that most might find daunting.
In the beginning of my employment I was leery to accept the position as his personal assistant at Endocrine Metabolic Center, not knowing what to expect. How could I work so closely with such an intellect? One day while sitting beside him at his desk, going through mail and reviewing the days events, he proceeded to tell me that the reason he didn’t have all his certificates and diplomas on the wall was because he believed everyone was equal. He said, “I am no better than anyone else”. I will never forget the sincerity in his eyes and I could tell he truly meant it. For the next eight years I watched him run his business always treating everyone with the same amount of respect and kindness.
As my husband often reminds me, people won’t necessarily remember what you accomplish or the things you say, but rather how you make them feel. I will always be grateful to Dr. Reitz for showing me this.
After my employment Dr. Reitz and his wife Myrnna stayed in touch, always asking how I was doing and how my family was. Little did I know the struggle they both went through when Dr. Reitz had to undergo a double lung transplant! Not many could overcome such a trial, but together these two very special people did. There is a place in heaven for sure for Dr. Reitz, and dear Myrnna, may you be comforted by God‘s love and promise in the days ahead.

"Attention all hands" " attention all hands" Officer at Heavens Gates
I can hear Commander Reitz telling God at Heavens Gate " Reporting for duty as ordered"
I would trade places with you if that was an option. You were truly an officer and a gentleman . They just do not make them like you any more my friend, go rest now with God.
I will never forget you were one of the first to have lunch with me upon my return from Operation Iraqi Freedom I was truly honored and lucky to call you my brother for we were a Band of brothers.
I salute you Commander Reitz , Now go have that slice of Jewish Rye bread , with nothing on it......and watch your Yankees from Heavens Gates..............Gunny Balderrama

Dr. Reitz was a pleasant man to know. He was wise and humble and had time to chat and inspire those who crossed his path in his life. Always brought a smile and respect to folks here at Nichols SJC. He has been and will be missed in our daily routine as we walk the halls here Quest San Juan Capistrano. Thank you Sir for always sharing you time with me when our paths crossed. God's blessing to his incredible spirit and Family.

Dear Richard,
I will always fondly remember the special friendship that we had after Myrnna has introduced me to you as her former teacher way back during her high school days in Liceo de Masbate, Masbate Philippines. We had a private arrangement whenever I am with you during my vacation days. As a nun, in the house you were the Cardinal and Myrnna was the Superior. In fact a room was reserved for me and it was tagged as "Sister's Room". It had the amenities of a convent room: crucifix, candles, sacred images among others. Thank you for all these .
You have left your earthly home and the people you love especially Myrnna but you are now in the heavenly abode where you will receive the best of all love from the Triune God: Father , Son, & Holy Spirit.
Love and prayers,
Sr. Sofia, OP

My very dear friend, Richard:
Hello, my name is Mervyn. Richard called me Merv most often. Now we have lost him and I grieve as much as any man can who has lost such an important person in life.
Richard coaxed me to come down to Nichol’s Institute to run the Coagulation Department. I eventually did this and during that time we became even closer friends. My Jackie and I went to his wedding with Myrna in Oakland and they launched a Myrna-Richard love fest ever since.
When he first became ill, I saw him walking across campus with an oxygen backpack and he survived a lung transplant and maybe the longest of those treated at UCLA.
We had many get togethers on a host of topics from science and to life. Richard enriched my life greatly and we became like brothers looking after each other and growing closer. He was a mentor and I his mentee and as we joked about our oldness we laughed and cried. He advised, cajoled, inspired and offered his philosophic concerns about life. This gave me enduring comfort in my own world of conflicts and challenges.
Richard, thank you for everything you gave and shared with me and to others who shared your life’s work. Your loss to us and to your love, Myrna, cannot be comprehended at this moment of grief.
Rest in peace my friend. Rest knowing you shared a wonderful life with those of us who were so privileged to know you.

Words cannot express how sad I am to hear of Dr. Reitz passing. I will miss him. I was in the Military Reserves and he was so supportive when I got recalled and sent to Afghanistan for 7 months. He was kind and generous and always willing to share his knowledge. He will be missed.

I came to know Dr Reitz in the early 1990's when he ran his endocrine laboratory in Oakland CA. I was fortunate to recruit him to head the endocrine laboratory in the new
Nichols Institute in San Juan Capistrano. Over the next decade he guided development
of one of the most sophisticated endocrine reference laboratories in the country. He was a skilled, thoughtful leader, coach and mentor with a focus on state of the art testing and service. Beverly and I extend our sincere condolences to Myrnna and his family members.

My condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Reitz. I worked with him for many years at Nichols Institute and Quest Diagnostics. He was a knowledgeable and skilled manager and endocrinologist. Due to his gentlemanly ways, joking, and jolly storytelling, he was also a pleasure to work with. I will always appreciate the help and guidance he gave me. I salute him for a life well-lived; the world has been blessed by his presence.

It is hard to say goodbye to a person and true human being. Always enjoyed talking to you and make you laugh. When you visited me in my office few months ago, I saw a person who does not complain, who has great wisdom. I know you left a beautiful loving wife she is missing you so much, but she is lucky to have an angel like you watching over her. Will cherish the great memories I know you are in a better place.
As to Myrnna, wish God give her comfort and ease her pain.
Our condolences to the family. May you RIP and will keep the good memories.
Our love to you and Myrnna always.

I wanted to take a moment to offer my condolences to the family at this very difficult time. I was very sad to hear of his passing. I met Dr. Reitz in 1995 here at Nichols Institute, now Quest Diagnostics, Nichols Institute in San Juan Capistrano. He was a wonderful man to work with. He was very helpful when I had to call him regarding any business issue and always had an answer for me. He would ask me about my grandchildren whenever we met, and I was surprised he remembered, but he always did. I will remember him fondly.

Dr. Reitz,
It was an honor and a pleasure to work for you. I loved your stories and corny jokes. I respected your knowledge and advice about both work and life. And while you most often put up a strong stern front, your heart always showed through. You did what was right, not what was easiest. That is true character. Rest in peace, your battle is over.
With much love, admiration and respect.

Dr.Reitz was an amazing friend and boss. He taught me so much about Endocrinology. What I cherished about him the most was his caring heart. He was quick with a great story. When he laughed his eyes smiled. Since he was a Navy man and I was raised a Marine Corp brat he used to like to tease me by saying “Don’t forget what it said at the top of your dad’s check DEPARTMENT OF NAVY” Then he would start laughing and wink at me. I will miss you Dr.Reitz. My thoughts and prayers are with Myrna as well as with the whole family.

Dr. Reitz, thank you for all of the time you spent to make me a better person, employee, and manager. You are admired by many. Since you departed from Quest Nichols Institute, it has not been the same. I miss your stories, the "Siesta" comments, and your Chinese proverbs. May God keep you in his Glory and may the Angels sign as they receive you in heaven. RIP
