Nicholas Kohut

Obituary of Nicholas Paul Kohut

Nicholas Paul Kohut, 73, a 13-year resident of Las Vegas, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 in his home.  Nick was born in Hammond, Indiana on September 17, 1943 to the late Nick Sr. and Betty. He married his high school sweetheart, Sandy on January 22, 1966. Nick graduated Purdue University in Indiana and earned his Chemical Engineering degree in June, 1966. His first job took Nick and Sandy to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he worked for Proctor and Gamble. His two sons were born there and in his spare time, he coached soccer for many years and took his teams to many different states for competition. He still has his soccer medals and a huge trophy from 1980, for the Tri-County Youth Soccer Championship. His next job was with Sherwin Williams and then onto N. Little Rock, AR where he was Plant Manager for Ashland Chemicals. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce in Jacksonville, AR. Many wonderful memories were connected to this position. The plant he ran was located a few miles from the Little Rock Air Force Base, where both, Sandy and Nick made many friends. Ron Scott, the squadron commander for the 62nd Airlift Squadron (Blue Barons) implemented a new program and Nick was made an “Honorary Squadron Commander”. Onto Knoxville, Tennessee where he worked for Jacobs Engineering and TVA. Then onto Baltimore, Maryland where he commuted from there to Las Vegas (his present home) where he worked for TVA. He retired in 2012.

Nick loved spending time with family and his grandchildren. He was known as “Poppie” to them. They meant everything to him. Nick was an avid ice skater and competed with many other skaters. He also was an avid exercise guru. He loved to try many new things, especially with his sister, Patt.  We used to call him “No Fear” Nick. The faster the roller coaster, the better he liked it. And all the danger rides, highest places, etc... never bother him at all.  He also enjoyed his other hobby, genealogy. His family will enjoy his efforts forever.

Nick is survived by his wife and best friend, Sandy, of 51 years; son Michael D. Kohut of Las Vegas and his wife Kim and son, David S. Kohut of Denver, CO and wife Kelly; grandchildren David J. from Reno, Emily and Laura, both from Las Vegas, and Kinley from Denver, CO; sister Patt Shaw from Clinton, IN; and niece, Aimee from Dallas, TX.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at noon in the Siena Community Center Ballroom, 10525 Siena Monte Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89135.  Please RSVP to Sandy.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nick’s memory are requested to Infinity Hospice, 6330 S Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89118 or the Las Vegas American Cancer Society.
