Obituary of Louis Augenblick

Louis Augenblick, age 91, was born November 27, 1925 and passed away on November 29, 2016. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Alexander Augenblick, and the late Sabrina (Pesis) Augenblick. Louis lived in Sun City Aliante with his wife Frances, a member of the Sun City Steppers. He and Frances met in 1946 at a dance in the Baltimore Ballroom. Together, they raised a beautiful daughter, Michelle who blessed them two grandsons: Dennis and Billy. Louis served his country in many historical and revolutionary events. Enlisting in the Navy at age 17, during World War II, he was ordered to London, England and then to Cherbourg, France (about a week after "D-day") to set-up and operate a Naval communication site in a German "pill box" on the beach. From there he was ordered to liberate the Port of La Havre in France, which became the depot of supplies and communication for the advanced Naval troops. During his two year station in France, he achieved the rank of Telegrapher 2nd Class and was the initial officer to receive the notice of President Roosevelt's death and the dropping of the Atom Bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th, and 9th, 1945. Louis was honorably discharged at Lidobeach, NY and offered a promotion to serve as Chief but denied the position as a result of homesickness from his 2 years overseas. However, years later he received a medal from the French government for his participation in World War II's Normandy Campaign. Later in life he joined Post 501 of the Jewish War Veterans and became post commander and eventually commander of the State of Nevada. After his military service, Louis worked as the trusted employee in a mail-order cigar shop of a former partner's son. Although he was a non-smoker, his commitment to his friend supported him putting up with the smoke for 5 years. Despite the smoke, he maintained his health to run 5-26 mile marathons in New York, with the medals to prove it. He grew tired of the retail business and took a financial training course and passed the Series 7 exam; one of the first investors to receive a stockbroker's license. This allowed him the opportunity to sell stocks, bonds and other financial items. With this accomplishment he then went to work for an investment firm in Mineola, New York from 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. He also worked as a sales person for ADP. Louis retired in 1989 and moved to Florida where he bought he bought a condo in West Palm Beach's Country Club Village where he became the President and served as the facility notary for 14 years. Casa Blanca Revisited (in the words of Louis Augenblick) W.P.B.F.L.A., the mid 90's- I was President of the Century Village Snorkel Club. We had snorkeled all over the Caribbean and were bored with the same trips. I suggested we snorkel in the Red Sea, as it was the world's best snorkel locations. Thirty people signed up with me and flew to Israel. I will skip the snorkeling part of the story. But, to you movie buffs, it may stir your memories. After touring most of Israel our tour bus took us to the H.O.D Hotel in Tiberius….or was it Casa Blanca???? I walked into the dining room of the HOD Hotel and I heard singing "Ich liebe dere Deutschland……was I in the Twilight Zone? Was I in Rick's café Casablanca?? 1941?? I immediately went to our 3 tables and led our American Jews to stand up and led them in a loud singing of "God Bless America"….the German tourists stopped singing!! I fulfilled one of the greatest fantasies a movie buff could experience. I did a Victor Lazlo, as played by Paul Henreid in the movie Casa Blanca." Louis is survived by his wife: Frances Augenblick; his daughter Michelle and son in law Dave ; grandchildren Dennis and Billy; step grandchildren John, Michael and Chrissy; step great grandchildren Alexandra, Trenton, Debi and Dillon; and many friends and affiliates. He will be remembered for his many contributions to his country; community and family. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Kraft-Sussman Funeral Services, 3975 S. Durango Drive, Suite 104, Las Vegas, NV 89147; with a burial the following day, on Monday, December 5 at 8:00 am.at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery located at 1900 Veterans Memorial Dr, Boulder City, NV 89005. Contributions in Louis' memory may be made to a charity for to support disabled veterans or breast cancer research.
